The Fragility of Freedom #HMD2024

Lighting Memorial Candles
Yolanda Bentham

On 29 January, we marked Holocaust Memorial Day #HMD2024 with a talk from two excellent speakers on two very different genocide experiences.

Thanks to Yolanda Bentham who shared the story of her late father, Dr David Henryk Ropschitz, imprisoned in Ferramonti concentration camp in southern Italy. We heard about this little-known camp and about living as a Jew in Mussolini’s Italy. We also heard from Mia Hasenson-Gross on the modern-day genocide of Muslim Uyghurs in China – living proof that the world is still allowing horrors to exist today.

The speakers then answered questions from the audience before a beautiful recital of the memorial prayer from Rabbi Green. This was followed by the lighting of memorial lights by Carry Sherman on behalf of NUS, by members of the Ark Shul and by representatives of other Holocaust Organisations.
